Back in mid June Hitachi announced that they where joining the party of brushless oscillating multi-tools. The Hitachi 18v Brushless Oscillating Multi-Tool is an extremely versatile tool to use in many different applications. Can go from grinding to cutting, to scraping to sanding all with just a quick change of the blade, no tools necessary. With the brushless technology now these applications can be done with longer run time between charges, increased power and extended durability.

Multi-tools are becoming more and more common on jobsites. Whether you are notching out hardwood flooring, repairing broken or cracked tiles, or making precision cuts along baseboard molding the OMT has something to offer for every type of contractor. With the added technology of brushless motors now you can spend more time on task and less wasted time waiting around for batteries to charge.

First Impression

My first thought was finally Hitachi came out with a Brushless OMT. The first thing that caught my attention was the weight and balance of this tool weighing in at 2.9lbs, it feels well balanced in my hand, even without the battery attached. The rubber over-mold and the slim body are a few other attention grabbers right off the bat.

Brushless Technology

The CV18DBLP4’s brushless motor has an impressive oscillating speed of 20,000 oscillations per minute which will cut, scrape, grind or sand just about anything you throw at it, with the appropriate accessories of course. The brushless motor technology delivers more power to the motor by minimizing energy loss through friction and heat, while also providing longer runtime. The durability of the tool is extended due to the lack of maintenance needed on the brushless motor.

Oscillating Speeds

This Hitachi OMT comes with two modes of speed, standard and auto mode. Standard mode has 5 speed variable dial allowing you to manually set the OPMs range from 6,000 OPMs up to 20,000 OPMs. Depending on the type of application you can set the dial to the speed you need and go. You can also select the auto mode and the tool will automatically determine the level of vibration based on the work load. This feature lowers vibration, reduces noise (is that possible) and will increase your battery run-time.

Comfortable Design

One thing we always look at is ergonomics and how well the tool feels in our hands. Hitachi did a real nice job with the soft rubber grip handle and the slim body profile. These features provide improved comfort and allows the user greater control while using the tool in tight places or the odd positions you could find yourself in.

Room for Improvement

Hitachi only has this tool on the market as a bare tool, meaning you only get the tool body and the Bi-Metal Plunge Cut Saw Blade. If you wanted to purchase this tool, you will need to buy the battery(s) and charger separately.  This OMT works with their 18 volt slide type batteries and charging system, so if you run Hitachi 18v cordless platform, then a bare tool is a good option for you.

Another thing that often makes me shake my head is the lack of tool storage. I have OCD when it comes to my tools and having them stored properly. It allows me to focus more on the task at hand versus looking for a tool or wondering where the Hitachi charger is. I try to organize as best as I can, having a nice plastic case for this tool that will except the tool, charger and an extra battery would be perfect.
