Everyone has a standard screwdriver in the shop but when you start working on specialty things like cars, guns, and electronics you often need a special screwdriver. As someone who works on guns quite a bit I know the difference between a properly secured fastener and a stripped screw is having the correct screwdriver. The folks over at Wheeler Tools sent us their 89 Piece Professional Gunsmithing Screwdriver Set to review.

I’ve been using it on several projects this Winter including mounting a scope, mounting a red dot, and changing out some grips on my pistols just to name a few projects. This has replaced a make shift kit I had on the bench with an assortment of bits from over the years.

The Wheeler 89 Piece Professional Gunsmithing Screwdriver Set includes 54 hollow-ground flat bits, 15 specialty bits, 8 allen, 4 phillips, 3 torx, 1 2 1/4 shaft extension, and a hex-to-square drive adapter. The hollow-ground bits have a concave shape that allows for insertion all the way into the screw slot for maximum contact. The kit also includes 2 non-slip, over molded plastic handles with a convenient hinged storage case complete with a bit location guide and is constructed from durable S2 tool steel.

Overall Impression

We all probably own more screwdrivers than any other tool. And those are great for 90% of the projects we do. However, when you start working on projects with special size fasteners it’s crucial to have the right size bits. The screwdriver handles are very comfortable and the bits fit tightly into the end of the screwdriver with no slop.  All of the bits that I have used fit snugly and the wide range has fit every fastener I’ve needed to use on each gun. This is an excellent choice for anyone working on guns looking for a dedicated screwdriver set.
