Metabo HPT 36V Multivolt Circular Saw First Impressions:
The Multivolt circular saw ships in a basic carboard box without many bells and whistles. But this is a good thing! It is Spartan and just wants to work right out of the box. The overall build quality is solid, but is not as refined as some of the more higher end brands. However the ergonomic grip, large aluminum base, and sleek overall profile make this a rugged saw that is ready for the job site.
Two features that immediately stood out on the Metabo HPT Multivolt circular saw are the excellent LED work lights and overall clear line of sight of the tool. Two white LED lights are positioned vertically on the left side of the blade. These lights project directly onto the work surface and your cut line. The line of sight of the Multivolt circular saw is also uncluttered and allows easy visibility of the work surface.
Even though I grew up and work in New England, I learned how to cut using an old Skilsaw Mag 77. Using a left sided circular is natural to me and I have never purchased anything different on my own. Picking up the Metabo HPT Multivolt it is different from what I am used to, but the clear line of sight made it easy for me to maintain accurate cut lines without searching for a view.
Testing the Metabo HPT 36V Multivolt 7 1/4″ Circular Saw:
The 36V Circular Saw became my go to saw for cutting dimensional framing lumber and sheet goods during the review process. This is a good representation of what a typical end user demands of a larger 7 1/4″ heavy duty saw. The saw was used to cross cut 2x lumber as well as make bevel cuts. The saw also had no issues cutting through larger 6×6 posts. For sheet goods the tool was used to make rip cuts on smaller decorative 1/4″ sheet goods as well as full length rips of 3/4″ OSB. The Metabo HPT Multivolt circular saw, regardless of the material, moved as quickly as I could push it without bogging down or shutting down.
The Multivolt Circular Saw came from the factory with a 24 tooth framing blade that cut well. The dust blower system broadcast the sawdust away from the tool and the material. This worked exceptionally well for outdoor work. Metabo HPT offers a full line of dust extractor accessories on their website.
What is Metabo HPT’s Multivolt?
Metabo HPT is giving end users the option of having a powerful cordless tool with their 36V battery platform. But for certain demanding applications you can swap out the battery for an AC adapter kit for uninterrupted corded power. That is the beauty of Multivolt!
That being said, the Metabo HPT 36V Multivolt batteries are no slouches either. The 4.0Ah batteries were capable of a full day’s work and I never ran out during intermittent use throughout the day. The Multivolt battery is also compatible with legacy tools and offers 8.0Ah in an 18V tool.
Metabo HPT’s Advanced Electronics:
The term “advanced electronics” gets thrown around a lot. Metabo HPT is backing up talk with the Multivolt circular saw. The Multivolt platform alone is advance, but on top of that we have additional features. The 36V Multivolt Circular Saw has a Silent mode feature. Sounds crazy right?? A silent circular saw??? The Metabo HPT silent mode is an auto sensing mode that drops the blade RPM to 2,000 then will automatically adjust the RPM back up to the max 4,300 RPMs depending upon demand. This lower blade speed creates less heard noise for the user and is pleasant to the ear. This feature on the Multivolt Circular Saw is awesome for lower demand tasks!
In general this saw has strong and powerful electronics and responsive controls. The blade brake also responds in seconds. I performed an impromptu test of the motor capabilities by making full length rip cuts at full depth (2 7/16″) on some tough old 6×6 PT. Check out our Instagram account to see a video.
Who did Metabo HPT Build the Multivolt Circular Saw For?
If you need a large 7 1/4″ circular saw for demanding tasks with the option of a cord, this is your tool! Even with the Multivolt adapter, the 36V Circular Saw is a beast of a cordless tool. Metabo HPT has built this saw for the demanding professional and has included Hi-Tech features to set it apart from the competition.
The 36V Multivolt Circular Saw is available now for $199.00 as a bare tool from our friends at Acme Tools. A battery and a charger will cost an additional $169.00. This is a premium price, but this tool feels like nothing short of a premium circular saw during use. Check out our Buy it Now box for a link to Acme and some great factory rebates from Metabo HPT.
Overall Thoughts on the Metabo HPT Multivolt Circular Saw:
This tool was a pleasure to use during the review process. I quickly overcame the unfamiliarity of the right side blade due to the clear line of sight. I appreciated Metabo HPT’s attention to detail with features like the LED work lights, the Silent (Auto) mode, and also the powerful motor.
One area that could be improved upon with the 36V Circular Saw is the raised lettering on the blade height adjustment and bevel settings. The controls lock down solid and are accurate, but the lettering should be a contrasting color to stand out better to the user.
The 7 1/4″ 36V Multivolt Circular Saw from Metabo HPT is an impressive and Hi-Tech performer perfect for the most demanding job site!

Great review of the Metabo 36v cir. saw. I’m seriously thinking of buying this saw. Would like to know if the dust blower only blows in front of the foot plate or does it also blow and keep the blade area by the cut line cleared through thru the blade area when viewed from the left side?
Glad you enjoyed the review. I am still very happy with my saw and it is a constant “go-to” for me. The dust blower does an excellent job of keeping the cut line cleared and yes it is clear and visible when looking at it from the left-hand side. That was something I was hesitant about at first, coming from primarily left blade saws, but the MHPT really does a great job of clearing dust. The saw also discharges dust very positively through the port on the right side of the saw.

[…] A vacuum is an incredibly high demand tool for a battery powered system. However Metabo HPT has combined some extremely innovative design features to give options to the end user. First and foremost is the ability for the MultiVolt system to accept an AC Adapter system. By attaching the adapter, MutliVolt Vacuum offers uninterrupted power as long as access to an outlet is available. Having used several MultiVolt tools from Metabo HPT, the cordless vacuum may be the perfect application for this adapter system. I discussed the MultiVolt system further in a recent article found here. […]
I own this saw and it works well with metal parts and high-tech electronics.
