Dewalt FlexVolt 1-7/8” SDS Max Hammer Drill Features
This cordless hammer can operates in 2 modes hammer / rotary drilling and hammer only [chipping]. It has two safety features that I know I will greatly appreciate, they are:
- E-Clutch System
- SHOCKS Active Vibration Control
E-Clutch System [Overload clutch]
The E-Clutch system senses the motion of the tool and shuts it down if necessary. Its anti-rotational technology protects the user in bind-up / stall situations. When the tool sense a stall or bind situation, it adjusts torque accordingly. A red LED indicator illuminates when the E-clutch system is engaged.
SHOCKS Active Vibration Control
The SHOCKS technology is basically Active Vibration Control which reduces vibration felt by the user at the handles. The handle is decoupled from the tool which ends up in reduced vibration felt by the user. This floating rear anti-vibration handle does a nice job at reducing vibration.
We used the DCH733 to install a car jack in a client’s garage. We found it to be a fast drilling, low vibration tool in older, hard concrete.
The tool achieves 13.3 Joules [According to EPTA-Procedure 05/2009]and 350 RPM.
Electronic Speed and Impact Control
TheDewalt FlexVolt 1-7/8” SDS Max Rotary Hammer has constant speed electronics allowing the tool to maintain speed under load.
The electronic speed and impact control allow the use of smaller bits without the risk of breakage. It allows hammer drilling into light and brittle materials without shattering giving the user more precise control through a speed dial.
E-Clutch and Service Indicator LED Light
This rotary hammer has two LEDs that indicate the E-Clutch function and a service indicator. The light functions are:
- RED – E-Clutch is engaged
- Yellow [Flashing] The tool runs for 150 hrs then service light comes on indicating that the mechanism needs a service to be performed in the next 10 hrs. of operation/trigger time.
- Yellow [Solid] After that 10hrs the light goes solid and indicates that you have exceeded the service interval and may damage the tool.
Chisel Index Position
The chisel can be indexed and locked into 24 different positions. This feature, while not a new one, certainly that makes the tool ergonomically friendlier to use.
Using the Dewalt FlexVolt 1-7/8” SDS Max Hammer Drill
We used the Flexvolt rotary hammer both in the horizontal and vertical drilling positions. At 20-pounds, it’s a manageable tool to do both, and certainly powerful enough.
It drilled effortlessly into a poured concrete wall to install gym equipment and later we used it to install and bolt down a vehicle jack system on a concrete floor.
The drill was easy to set up and use, and intuitive. It’s perfect for use in concrete demo, drilling, chipping, breaching cinderblock, rebar doweling, and trenching.
Though this new DEWALT tool is bigger and heavier than my 1-3/4” DEWALT rotary hammer, DEWALT has been able to keep the weight down of the tool and increase the impact energy 20% to 13.3J’s.
With increases in power comes weight!
