When you hear the term “Framing nailer” one company comes to mind, Hitachi. The name Hitachi has been at the front of the pack for more than a decade, with their innovation and solidly built framing nailers. In this review, we’ll be taking a look at the Hitachi NR83AA5 Paper Collated Framing Nailer.

First Look at the Hitachi NR83AA5

While for many years Hitachi has come up with a numerous amount of different models and styles of framing nailer’s the loyal Hitachi following keep asking for one style in particular. This brings us to the latest update of the NR83 Series. Hitachi has listened to its end users and responded with the new Hitachi NR83AA5 Paper Collated Framing Nailer .

Our first look at the updated framing nailer, we get to see the new aero dynamic body style of the NR83AA5. Although in my eye’s not really a feature to make the nailer function better, it is definitely some nice eye candy. Another thing that was noticed right away was the new trigger style, which we will go over while covering the features of the NR83AA5. We were glad to see that they decided not to steer too far away from the classic style that tradesman loved so much.

Hitachi NR83AA5 Features

The new Hitachi NR83AA5 Paper Collated Framing Nailer has been rebuilt with all metal parts for the best in job site durability. Another interesting feature to the A5 line up is the use of their Cylinder Valve Drive System. This means it uses the cylinder to open the valve so the nailer is replenished with air and has a faster response time. This is also helped by Hitachi’s new patented Selective Actuation Trigger. The new redesigned trigger lets you switch between sequential fire and bump fire in a second with no tools required.

The framing nailer seems to have gone back to basics and is a true workhorse. I feel this gun will truly hold up to heavy job site use.

Better Toe Nailing and Hook

The framing nailer also has nice sharp teeth on the nosing for better toenailing. Now for one of my favorite features. When you hear framing nailer what is the first feature you think of? Yes, rafter hook! Hitachi has included a rafter hook with there their new updated A5 models. It is made of a ⅛” steel fixed hook. This means it is not collapsible and is in a fixed position. The rafter hook is held on by 3 hex bolt’s that fastens to the bottom of the handle over the air intake fitting.

NEW Sequential to Bump Fire Adjustment

A new feature to the NR88AA5 framing nailer is in there new trigger design. Straight out of the box the trigger comes locked in sequential also known as single fire, With a simple pull wire lock, behind the trigger you can then switch easily between the 2 modes. This can be done quickly and simply without any need to remove or replace the trigger itself.

Depth Adjustment

One feature that I was shocked not to see on the new A5 nailer, is a depth adjustment. This, in my opinion, should be on every framing nailer nowadays.

 Final Impression

My overall thought on the new Hitachi NR83AA5 Paper Collated Framing Nailer is definitely a positive one. The framing nailer seems to have gone back to basics and is a true workhorse. I feel this gun will truly hold up to heavy job site use. I am however disappointed with the NR83AA5 being the only model in the new A5 series to not have a depth adjustment dial. Also, I feel there is room for improvement on the rafter hook. Maybe have the part sold separately as an aftermarket replacement part. All in all, I would highly recommend this nailer.
